You should! Definitely. Engagement sessions are fun and they’re a great way to meet your photographer and see how well you gel. By the time the engagement session is done, you’ll feel comfortable in front of the camera (our cameras, we hope) and with us around and when the wedding day arrives we’ll all be like old friends. The photos of your wedding day will be so much better and so much more natural.

When to book the Engagement Session?

Some say right after you get engaged. Others think you should wait for late spring or the summer. We look at engagement sessions as wonderful opportunities to meet our clients in a relaxed atmosphere, way before the BIG DAY. Ideally, your engagement session photographer will also be your wedding day photographer. Better, in this case, to take your time and choose wisely. You can opt for a wedding photography package that includes the engagement shoot (if you feel confident in your photographer of choice), or ask the photographer if they are open to doing an engagement session only. If all goes great (fingers crossed) then you will also book them for the wedding. Obviously.

We do include the Engagement Session in select wedding collections and offer them separately as well (but in reality, 99%+ of all our engagement sessions are from wedding clients). We book engagement sessions at least one month in advance, but the sooner the better. Especially if you're busy during the week and can only be available on weekends. Saturdays and Sundays tend to get filled pretty fast, especially on warm months. See when we're available by sending us a message or an email.

Where would we do the Engagement Session?

There are so many beautiful places around Northern California. Baker Beach, Golden Gate Park, Lombard Street, Sutro Baths and Mt. Sutro, de Young Museum, SF City Hall, Palace of Fine Arts, Portero Hill, Lover's Lane Trail, Conservatory of Flowers, Oakland Redwoods, Mt. Tamalpais, Muir Woods, Ocean Beach, Point Reyes, Marin Headlands, Carmel-by-the-Sea, Mendocino, Napa, Yosemite. Just to name a few. How about a Cable Car ride? We love to photograph you in places that have special meaning to you both. Somewhere in your neighborhood perhaps. Or your favorite cafe? The place where you first met? Where you had your first date? Where he proposed?

What to Expect from the Engagement Session?

They should be a lot of fun! Be relaxed, enjoy it. Laugh a lot. Ask questions. Engagement sessions are a great opportunity to get to know your photographers, start feeling comfortable with them and in front of the camera, share your style and show off your personality and your expectations.

It’s not every day that you do a photo session, we know that and some of our clients have never had one prior to the engagement shoot. It’s nothing to be worried about. It’s probably the case for 75% of couples so you’re in merry (and many:) ) company.

Engagement sessions can be romantic or adventurous, funny, quirky or a little bit of many things. They should match your styles and personalities and it will be something you will remember you have done together, for years to come.

You can do outfit changes, hair and makeup changes, have no makeup if that’s what makes you comfortable. We can have props or no props. For instance, if you’re going to use one of the photos from the engagement session for your Save The Date cards, we might have a prop with the date. Or maybe we’ll just bring fun stuff, like balloons and googly eyes and wigs or puppies (yes, please! We’ll have a couple of pugs, if possible, and maybe some French bulldogs while we’re at it, a Golden retriever! Any other ideas?)

Remember, anything goes at engagement sessions. You laugh, enjoy your time with your partner, celebrate your love and have fun! And through beautiful images of the day, we get to create together a mini story…of you and your partner, and your love! And we can’t wait!
